Wouldn’t you rather have tooth-colored fillings? Silver amalgam has served as a filling material for teeth since the 1840s, but technology has advanced to where white fillings are now strong enough to be placed on back teeth.
These fillings are made from a tooth-colored composite and they are applied using highly advanced bonding technology.
Why Choose White Fillings?
There are many reasons to choose white composite fillings:
- They don’t require as much removal of your existing tooth structure. Silver amalgam fillings need to be at least two millimeters deep and all of the weakened tooth structure needs to be removed. Since white composite fillings are bonded to the teeth and there is no minimum depth requirements, the weakened tooth structure can be left alone.
- When done properly, composite fillings are more comfortable because they don’t conduct heat and cold the way metal fillings do. Also, during the bonding process the sensitive part of the tooth is sealed, so there is less sensitivity.
- They make for a beautiful white smile while metal fillings detract from a natural looking smile. While laughing people can usually see your back teeth and it is much more attractive to see white on your back teeth instead of black. You should never have to feel uncomfortable while smiling or laughing.
