Questions About Dentistry Answered

Dentist Said I Need Implants that I Cannot Afford

January 13, 2023 by writeradmin

I don’t know what to do. I lost two teeth a year ago and need to fill the space. My dentist wants me to fill it with dental implants but I just can’t afford to do that, especially because he wants full payment up front. Do I have any other options that are more affordable? I hate looking like a hillbilly.

Kevin

Dear Kevin,

Hockey player with missing tooth

The good news is that you do have options. Before going into them, I want to make sure you understand how important it is that you do get these teeth replaced. When you have open spaces in your bite, the adjacent teeth will begin to shift or tip into that space, which will throw off your bite. Aside from an unsightly smile, that can also lead to painful TMJ disorder.

While dental implants are your best option because they protect you from bone loss in your jaw, they are not your only option. Sometimes, you need to get an affordable option while you save up for the ideal procedure.

Tooth replacements, other than a dental implant, range from a dental bridge, which is also permanent, all the way down to a dental flipper, which is removable and meant to be temporary. If you plan on saving up to get dental implants, then I would get the dental flipper. It is your least expensive option and will keep your teeth in place while you work toward your goal.

If you have no intention of getting dental implants, then I would lean toward the dental bridge. It is permanent and will give you a greater sense of security. You’ll also have a much higher chewing capacity than if you were to get something like a removable partial denture.

Finally, bear in mind that dentists differ in their willingness to work with patients financially. If you look for a dentist who advertises him or herself as an affordable dentist, they may be willing to let you pay your treatment out slowly. This could give you a more realistic chance of getting the better procedure.

One Orthodontist Thousands Less

February 23, 2019 by writeradmin

I don’t know how it is possible for one orthodontist to cost so much less than another. It’s appealing, but I don’t want to make a mistake about this. I’m out of college and in my first PR job. My appearance is important which is why I want to straighten my teeth. However, I’m still paying off student loans, and will be for a while, so I don’t want to spend a fortune. The first dentist suggested Invisalign. The next one suggested Six-Month Smiles. The second one seems to work faster and is thousands of dollars cheaper. How is that possible?

Karyn

Dear Karyn,

A woman placing her Invisaliagn aligners

Do you remember in Algebra when they said you can’t add x’s and y’s? Well, this is sort of like that. Invisalign is a complete orthodontic treatment It will shift your bite into proper position, changing aligners every two weeks.

Six-Month Smiles is a completely different orthodontic option which doesn’t correct your complete bite, but just straightens the front visible teeth. This is also why it takes less time and doesn’t cost as much.

This means the second orthodontist isn’t charging less but offering a completely different treatment option.

Which Option is Best?

Which one you choose really depends on your goals for your smile. Do you just want it to appear straight and beautiful and saving money is the higher priority or are you wanting your bite fixed, while looking straight and beautiful?

There’s not a right or wrong answer unless you’ve had jaw pain or persistent headaches. If you have had those, fixing your bite would likely alleviate both of those. Not fixing it could lead to TMJ problems. I don’t say that to scare you. Headaches don’t necessarily mean TMJ, it is just a symptom.

Combining Procedures

One thing you can do with Invisalign which you can’t do with the Six-Month Smiles clear braces is whiten your teeth at the same time. The aligners can double as teeth whitening trays. Then, by the time your treatment is finished you’ll have both straight teeth and a white smile.

My daughter is in tears because she doesn’t want braces

June 16, 2014 by writeradmin

I have a sixteen year old daughter. We just moved to the states. The children here seem to all have perfect teeth. I know she should get braces, but she is very upset about it.  She said the children with braces are made fun of and she doesn’t want that to happen to her. If she’s happy with out straight teeth, should I make her get braces?

Maggie L. – San Diego, CA

Maggie,

Whether or not your daughter gets braces is a decision you’ll have to make together. It wouldn’t be fair of me to tell you what is the best decision for your daughter, especially since I haven’t examined her.  Maybe her teeth are fine, but just crooked. In that case it wouldn’t matter if she got braces. In other situations, maybe her teeth are out of alignment in a way that can lead to TMJ. That can cause serious problems and pain for her.

My suggestion is you see a dentist who does orthodontic work and they can examine her and see what will be best for her.  I do have some good news for you. If it is determined that she will need braces, she’s not stuck with those metal things that makes her afraid of being made fun of in school There are now “invisible braces”, such as Invisalign. No one will ever know she is wearing them. Her teeth can be straightened in secret.
