Questions About Dentistry Answered

Are Dental Implants Really Superior?

April 30, 2018 by writeradmin

I’ve got three teeth that need replacing thanks to a baseball bat that hit me instead of a pinata. The neighbor kid has a swing like you would not believe. Seriously, the Yankees should already be on the phone with his parents. I wanted to get a removable partial denture because it seemed the most in line with our budget. But, my dentist keeps pushing me toward dental implants. He says it’s because the teeth are at the front of my bottom jaw. I looked into it and, yeah, they’re stronger, but I get the feeling he’s saying to get them because he’ll make LOADS more money.

LeeAnne

Dear LeeAnne,

Dental Implant Diagram

If you call the Yankees and it pans out, maybe you’ll get a recruiter fee. Before we get into your treatment options, I wanted to ask whether your dentist had given you a reason in the past to doubt his integrity and think he’s just trying to get you to do the most expensive treatment? It’s important you’re able to trust your dentist. If you have a reason not to feel he can be trusted, you’d be better served to find a different dentist. You want a dentist you can trust.

Now, onto your question. I think your dentist is concerned about the effects of facial collapse on your lower jaw. If you’re missing three teeth in that same area, your jaw will begin to shrink. Dental implants protect you from that. The implanted prosthetic root tells your body teeth are still there and your jawbone is still needed. So, yes, they’re stronger. But, they also protect your jawbone from slowly disappearing.

What Your Dentist Should Provide

Ethically, your dentist should tell you all of your options whether he thinks they’re good options or not. However, he should also recommend which options he thinks are better, along with why. He’ll know the pros and cons of each option and should take the time to share them with you.

The second thing he should provide is answers. You should be able to ask as many questions as you need and he patiently provides answers. It sounds like you were totally unsure about his recommendation. I don’t know if you asked questions and he refused to answer or if you weren’t comfortable asking.

Know when you’re talking about your health and finances, you have every right to ask questions. I know some dentists tend to get offended when you ask questions as if because they’re the dentist they should not be questioned. But that is unfair to patients.

Options for Missing Teeth

  • Removable Partial Denture

These have the obvious downside of not being permanent. Plus, we already discussed facial collapse. As far as quality of life goes, some patients complain of food getting under their denture. Their big benefit is their price.

  • Dental Bridge

These are permanent, but you still have to deal with the facial collapse. Additionally, the more teeth you need to replace on the same bridge unit, the less stable. If one part of the bridge breaks, the whole unit has to be replaced. Where your bridge would have to be placed is especially tricky.

  • Dental Implants

These are permanent, strong, and will protect you from facial collapse. Their biggest drawback is their cost and the fact it requires surgery.

Those options are up to you, though. A dentist can strongly recommend one solution over another, but it is up to you which one you pick.

I Need Affordable Help For My Mom, Fast!

October 13, 2017 by writeradmin

I went to visit my mother who lives in a different state. We’re trying to talk her into moving in with us. She’s 85 and her health is declining. While we were having dinner one of her teeth fell out, right there on the plate. She said she lost two others as well. I don’t know how much money she has. What is an affordable way to take care of this? I’m worried sick about her. I’ve heard both dental implants and bridges are good. What’s your opinion?

Elizabeth E.

Dear Elizabeth,

Tulsa Affordable Dentist

It’s lovely that you’re there to care for your mother. When we’re children we rely on them. As they age, it is sometimes hard for them to allow us to look after them. I hope she allows you to help.

If your mother has teeth just falling out, that means she has incredibly advanced gum disease. That needs to be treated right away. She’s going to continue losing teeth until it is under control. Because of the gum disease, neither dental implants or a bridge will work. She doesn’t have anything strong enough to maintain them.

Affordable Tooth Replacement Options

However, once her gum disease if dealt with, dental implants are the top of the line treatment. But, you asked for affordable and I would not call them that.

The most affordable dental treatment for her will be complete dentures. Generally, it wouldn’t be something I’d recommend because of the facial collapse which results from bone resorption, but your mother’s 85. I don’t think it will be an issue for her.

Cu-Sil denture Affordable dental treatmentIf there are teeth which can be saved, don’t switch her treatment to removable partial dentures. Her teeth have been through a lot and that particular treatment (along with a dental bridge) puts too much stress on the remaining teeth for her situation. Instead, you could get her a denture which makes room for her remaining teeth without putting stress on them. It’s called a Cu-Sil Denture. I’ve put a picture of it to the left.

Best of luck with your mother.

I’m Being Bullied By My Dentist

April 26, 2017 by writeradmin

I’ve lost several teeth. I don’t have much money, so I thought I’d get a removable partial denture. My dentist insists I get dental implants. He keeps telling me I’ll ruin my life with dentures, but I don’t want to go into debt for a procedure I can’t afford. He won’t shut up about it. Is it really that horrible a decision?

Brooke – Texas

Brooke,

This type of behavior from a dentist really galls me. While dental implants may be the top of the line treatment, it also comes with a top of the line price tag. Not everyone can afford that. And dentists need to understand that.

There is something called phased treatment that affordable dentists are very willing to suggest and provide. You can start off with a removable partial denture. Possibly you could even afford to have it anchored with a mini implant. Then as you have the money you can switch to a full implant. Depending on how many teeth you’ve lost, you may only need one or two.

While his methods are a bit bullish, he likely only has your well-being in mind. Dentures can be uncomfortable and reduce your chewing capacity no matter how well made they are. Then, there is the loss of jaw bone minerals that come from not having a tooth root anymore. With dental implants, the body is tricked into thinking that root is still there and you retain all your minerals.

In your place, I would just tell him this is what you can afford and that’s that. If you’re interested in working toward another treatment, you can tell him that. It may shut him up. But, either way, it’s your mouth, your budget, and your choice.

Dentist Refuses to do any treatment except implants

June 23, 2016 by writeradmin

I need to replace several teeth, but my dentist says he only does dental implants. I can’t afford that procedure. Please tell me there are other viable options. And also tell me they’re more affordable.

Humphrey A.  – Maine

Humphrey,

While it is his practice, I will admit to getting a little frustrated when dentists are so inflexible, especially when there are other viable options.

There are affordable ways to get your teeth replaced. Just some of the options are removable partial dentures or a dental bridge.

You can even get certain types of more affordable implants, such as mini implants or implant supported dentures.

Another option, would be to find a dentist who is willing to work with you on payments for dental implants or another replacement option.

Insurance for implants

June 8, 2012 by writeradmin

I am a candidate for dental implants (yay!) and wondered if there is a dental insurance that covers them?

Brooke C. – Alpine, Utah

Brooke,

Generally, a dental plan will cover the least expensive treatment option. In this case they might pay for a removable partial dentures instead of an implant. However, you can apply that payment toward dental implants and just make up the difference. It would be worth it because they are generally the best solution to missing teeth.
